Human Marriage as a Picture of Divine Covenant:

  • The Catechism of the Catholic Church identifies the Bible’s characterizations of marriage this way: “Scripture speaks throughout of marriage and its mystery, its institution and the meaning God has given it, its origin and its end, its various realizations throughout the history of salvation, the difficulties arising from sin, and its renewal in the Lord in the New Covenant of Christ and the Church” (CCC 1602). Indeed, Christian marriage is an image of the New Covenant: it is indissoluble, life giving, and loving.

Bible Verses

Verses taken from RSVCE at https://www.biblegateway.com/

Marriage

Hebrews 13:4: Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled; for God will judge the immoral and adulterous.

1 Cor 7:1-7:  Now concerning the matters about which you wrote. It is well for a man not to touch a woman. But because of the temptation to immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband.[a] The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. For the wife does not rule over her own body, but the husband does; likewise the husband does not rule over his own body, but the wife does. Do not refuse one another except perhaps by agreement for a season, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, lest Satan tempt you through lack of self-control. I say this by way of concession, not of command. I wish that all were as I myself am. But each has his own special gift from God, one of one kind and one of another.

Divorce

Matthew 5:31-32: 31 “It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ 32 But I say to you that every one who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity,[a] makes her an adulteress; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

Note: See further word study of "unchastity" at Blue Letter Bible link below to Porneia

Matthew 19:9: And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for unchastity,[a] and marries another, commits adultery; and he who marries a divorced woman, commits adultery.”[b][c]

Mark 10:11-12: 11 And he said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another, commits adultery against her; 12 and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”

Luke 16:1818 “Every one who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.

1 Cor 7:10-11: 10 To the married I give charge, not I but the Lord, that the wife should not separate from her husband 11 (but if she does, let her remain single or else be reconciled to her husband)—and that the husband should not divorce his wife.
